Welcome to the PatientPlus decision aid

How can this decision aid help you?

A fracture of the end of the humerus bone that enters the elbow joint can be treated with or without surgery. Surgery can either 1) Try to realign the bone for improved function or 2) Replace the entire elbow with a metal and plastic prosthesis.

There are advantages and disadvantages of each treatment option. The more healthy and active you are, the more likely you will choose surgery to realign the bone. If you are ill or inactive, you might prefer nonoperative treatment or an elbow replacement.

This decision aid is designed to help patients aged 65 years or greater decide their preferred treatment for their fracture of the distal humerus. It provides you with the harms and benefits of each treatment. If you’re unsure, your doctor can help you choose the best treatment for you.

At the end you can print this decision aid. This way you can go over it again and discuss everything with people you trust.
