The knee joint The knee joint is the largest joint in the body. It is formed by the bone in the upper leg (femur), the large bone in the lower leg and the kneecap. Your knees bear your body weight. The ends of the bones are covered with cartilage. Cartilage makes a smooth surface where the bones move against each other (figure).
