Pull some of the fluid out with a needle

The fluid can be drawn out with a sterile needle. There is still a root connecting it with the joint. Because of this it is possible for the ganglion to return.

Advantages

  • The lump goes down for a while and might even stay away;
  • Can be done at an office visit;
  • No scar.

Disadvantages

  • Pain of the procedure;
  • The fluid sometimes returns;
  • Small risk of infection.

Results

Reported results vary between studies but it is estimated that in around 70 of 100 patients the ganglion stays away.1,2
