Up to 73 of 100 patients become independently mobile because the knee joint is preserved and also a lighter prosthesis is used.^5,11 They also have fewer surgeries on average (most have just one surgery) and shorter hospital stays than people who try to keep more of the foot.⁸

You must also wait for the incision to heal before you can be fit with a prosthesis. You may require PT or rehab to learn how to ambulate, although after 6 weeks most patients are able to start the process of fitting and adapting to their prosthesis. It can be up to one year before you adapt to your prosthesis completely.¹⁰
