What is an Achilles tendon rupture? The Achilles tendon helps the calf muscle move the foot. You use your Achilles tendon when you walk and when you stand on your toes. There is often a pre-existing tendinopathy. Diseases of tendons and muscle attachment points are increasingly common after age 30 and before age 60. An abnormal tendon can break (rupture) with a single forceful push off of the foot. You may feel a pop and pain in your lower calf and heel. You can no longer push off with your foot.
