How can a humerus fracture be treated?

Your proximal humerus fracture can be treated in one of two ways:

  • Use a sling for about a month.
  • Surgery

Both options have specific advantages and disadvantages.

To date, our best evidence suggests that on average surgery may not improve your comfort or shoulder function.1,2 It is possible that some fractures will benefit more than others.

The fracture needs 3 months to be ready for forceful use (e.g. heavy lifting, supporting one's body weight) - with or without surgery.
