What are the signs and symptoms?

The most common symptom is pain at the base of the thumb. The pain often occurs with gripping or pinching. Opening jars, turning doorknobs or keys, and writing can all be painful. A bump may develop at the base of the thumb and the thumb may develop a bend.

How is Arthritis at the base of the thumb diagnosed?

Doctors usually know if you have thumb arthritis by listening to you and examining you. Pain and a grinding sensation may occur with pressure and movement of the joint. X-rays are not usually needed for diagnosis. They may be used if surgery is planned.
