Olecranon bursitis without infection is harmless and can be left alone. The fluid tends to go away, although it can take many months. Some people choose to pad or wrap the elbow. Some limit contact, pressure, or frequent bending. But it’s not clear any of these interventions actually make it go away faster.1,2,3,4,5

Olecranon bursitis is a permanent condition that usually involves both elbows. The fluid will resolve over many months. But it can return.3 There may also be some other tissue or reactive bone that accumulates at the bursa, leaving a permanent bump.

  • No complications.

  • It may feel strange not to do anything about the large bump on your elbow.
