Surgery cuts the tunnel open where the tendon is thick. It can be done under local anesthesia. The scar is between 1 and 2 centimeters long.

There is also a small risk of infection, which is usually easily treated with antibiotic pills, but occasionally another surgery is needed. Severe infections are rare.
