Surgery

Surgery can remove the cyst and its connection to the joint. The wound can initially be tender, red and thick. It improves for a year. The joint may be stiff for a similar time period.^4,5

Advantage

• Usually gets rid of the ganglion.

Disadvantages

• Trade a bump for a scar;
• The ganglion can return;
• Risk of infection;
• Risk of wound problems;
• About a year of recovery time.

Results

Results of surgery vary between studies but it is estimated that in around 95 of 100 patients the ganglion stays away.^4,5
